This was the first jean after the 1973 Levi's and Co patent for riveted clothing had expired. This allowed other companies to produce similar riveted denim overalls. Consequently Levi's began to print the pocket bag with information on the strength and durability of their 'XX' clothing. 1890 was the first year that that the '501' number was introduced, marking the birth of an icon.
